Athlete Spotlight of the Week: Mia Golovich

The clubs are swinging at full effect for Sonoma State’s Women’s Golf Team as Mia Golovich recently won the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) Player of the Week Award. At the San Marcos Fujikura Invitational event last week, she finished third overall leading the Sonoma State team. She finished with a tournament-best of eight birdies, 16 pars and was a top CCAA finisher.

What started with a season-opening win against Stanford quickly flipped into four consecutive losses, leaving the team with a desire to regroup and regain that opening game energy. Softball sweeps CCAA Awards

Sonoma State Softball continues to rack up their CCAA award count with two of their athletes winning awards after the team’s performance against San Francisco State. These recognitions came after the Seawolves swept SFSU and prevented them from scoring a single run across all four games played between Feb. 17 and 18. Nichole Sarra earned the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) Softball Pitcher of the Week award for the week of Feb. 13 through Feb. 19. The senior pitcher threw SSU Softball’s first perfect game in the program’s history on Feb 18. In a 45-pitch game, Sarra sent 15 batters in a row back to the dugout from where they came.

Wells wins Player of the Year, SSU fights till the end

The Sonoma State Men’s Basketball season came to a close this past week after being eliminated from the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) tournament. Despite the loss, the team had plenty to be proud of after such a successful season that included a Conference Player of the Year Award for Jaylen Wells and a CCAA Honorable Mention for Austin Fadal.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, three of our Women’s basketball players earned All-CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) honors. Forward Alli McDonald was granted First-Team All-CCAA honors while fellow Seawolves, Forward, Amanda Luckett, and Guard, Cielo Gonzalez were given Honorable Mentions for their hard work this season.

She joined the team this year and she said, “I think it was the best decision I have made, and I am just so happy to be with this team. They are truly family to me.”

Sonoma State Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams celebrated their graduating class this past Saturday after the Women’s team clinched a win and the Men’s team suffered a tough loss, fighting tooth and nail to the last seconds of the game.

Lyszczyk makes CCAA history

Sonoma State Baseball made program and CCAA history this past Friday when Marika Lyszczyk became the first female to play in a game. Lyszczyk is originally from British Columbia and signed with the Seawolves this past year. There was plenty of buzz early in the season about the new recruit. Coming in to pitch in the 9th inning, Marika recorded three outs while giving up one unearned run on her way to history.

Seawolves suffer two tough defeats at home


The Sonoma State Men's Basketball team had a two-game home slate last week. It kicked off on Thursday night when the Seawolves faced a shorthanded Cal State Dominguez team. Dominguez Hills came into this game with the worst record in the CCAA at 4-12 and suited up only five players for the game, while Sonoma was perched in third place in the conference at 9-7.

Women's Basketball wins at the buzzer

Sonoma State Women’s Basketball defeats Cal State East Bay on an instrumental last-second buzzer-beater.  In the last few seconds of a five-minute overtime, junior Jayme Blackard pushed the ball up the court to the right wing where she pulled up over her defender and knocked down the mid-range shot at the buzzer with no time remaining. The moment sent a bolt of electricity through the building as Blackard was swarmed by her teammates after one of their season defining moments.

She finished the week off with a .700 BA, two doubles, one home run, two RBIs, four runs, two stolen bases and two three-hit games. Seawolf Lacrosse opens up the season

As 2023 warms up, the Seawolves grow hungry. Sonoma State Men’s Lacrosse team is ready for a season of redemption. After a week of two-a-days(Two practices a day) and the beginning of official practice, the season opened up with a scrimmage against the Sacramento Brewer’s Men’s Lacrosse Club on Jan. 28 . The Seawolves won 15-9 with everyone from seniors to freshman stacking up goals. Thankfully, for the older guys on the club team, injuries were kept to a minimum aside from a pulled hamstring. By the end of the day, hands were shaken, laughs were had, and joint team photos were taken.

Home Run, SSU Softball is back!

Sonoma State softball is back in action this spring and the team has big expectations after last year’s stellar season. Sonoma finished 42-18 and 24-12 in conference play last year and made a statement by winning the CCAA championship while recording the most runs in the tournament's history. Last year's squad also made a strong run in the Division ll West Regional tournament and they look to keep the momentum rolling into this season. The team is ranked number third in the Preseason Coaches Poll but have their sights set on higher expectations. The Seawolves also have four players who are continuing their All-Conference performances from last year on the CCAA Preseason Watchlist.

Sonoma State golf teams ready for a big season

Sonoma State Men’s and Women’s golf teams are gearing up for yet another successful season. When asked what his expectations are regarding the upcoming season, Head Coach Val Verhunce said that doesn’t like expectations, but he did state that, “If we manage ourselves correctly, results should be good.” Coach Val has coached some impressive teams in the past, including the 2009 National Championship-winning team. Someone else who has National Championship pedigree is the team’s new assistant coach, Jess Stimack.  His own team at Chico State finished second at Nationals in 2004, so it’s safe to say the team is under sturdy leadership.

Wells earns first CCAA Player of the Week in over five seasons.

Jaylen does well yet again. Sophomore and Business major, Jaylen Wells, exploded in Sonoma State’s three game set last week, making himself Sonoma’s first CCAA player of the week since the 2015-16 season. During the Nov. 21-27 week, Wells was able to put up 77 points, 26 rebounds, and 13 assists throughout the three games they played. Despite losing on Nov. 22 against Humboldt in the CCAA opener, Wells managed to score a career high of 30 points against the Lumberjacks. Later in the week during the Thanksgiving Classic held at the Wolves Den, he managed 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists against Fresno Pacific. In the last game, he came up with 28 points, eight rebounds, and five assists against Holy Names. Quite an impressive week for such a young, talented player.
