With Earth Day around the corner, people will celebrate the holiday as they always do. The Passing Over of Jewish Representation on Campus

While walking through Oliver‘s Market in Cotati wearing a Star of David on a necklace, an older Jewish woman walks up to me and mentions how little representation Jewish people have in the local area. This was in December when statues are dressed up like Santa, and Christmas lights are hung on the trees down Rohnert Park Expressway, but other cultures aren’t represented in any way locally.

Restrict act could jeopardize TikTok and much more

Does the government need to be focusing on how to ban TikTok when many of those concerned with it are farther removed from technology than some Sonoma State students’ parents? 

Bill S.686 is known as the Restrict Act or the “TikTok Ban Bill.” This bill seems to be centered around TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, the Chinese technology firm that owns the app. However, it is about more than just TikTok, this is about the government wanting unlimited access to people’s devices and appliances whenever they want, based on what actions are deemed “threatening.”

Too young? New Arkansas bill allows 14 year olds to work

Prior to child labor laws being passed many American children, some as young as 7 years old were subject to unsanitary and unsafe work conditions, long hours, very little pay and no education. Today, children are protected from such work environments and are required to be at least 16 years old to work in most cases, with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). However things might be changing in Arkansas, as Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed the Youth Hiring Act of 2023 into law on March 6. This law would allow children as young as 14 to work in Arkansas without having to get an employment certificate.

When students leave their evening classes, the sky is either a gradient of dark blues and oranges or it is entirely pitch black. For students taking night classes, the walk from Carson Hall to Lot E that is usually a nice, leisurely stroll during the day can suddenly feel like an unsettling and eerie walk. 

While the use of the Emergency Blue Light Call buttons scattered throughout campus seems nice, it is unfortunate that it is not accessible through every part of the campus. These buttons only serve as a way to report known or suspected crime, especially in emergencies.

Crisis team unnecessary at this year’s slap-free Oscars

Last year’s Oscar award show was a bigger deal than usual and not because of the results. The now infamous moment when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage after a joke aimed at Smith’s wife, has forced the Oscars to introduce a “crisis response team”. The team was dedicated to handle any unexpected event in hopes that they could prevent any more scandalous moments from happening. However many are split on whether or not this team was necessary or able to stop any situations like last year’s.

Lack of equal pay worries women entering the workforce

Since the foundation of Women’s History Month in 1987, people have been celebrating and recognizing the significant contributions made by women throughout the past and present with one of the biggest achievements being the Equal Pay Act, which passed in June of 1963. The act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work and protects against wage discrimination based on sex. While it is a huge step forward for women, unfortunately it remains one of the biggest issues that is still unresolved.
