Seawolves fall out from tournament

This past weekend the 2023 CCAA Softball Tournament was held at Cal State Dominguez Hills’ Toro Diamond. The tournament featured a modified format that mirrored the baseball championship tournament. The first day (Wednesday) saw four lowest-seeded teams compete in a single elimination game. The remaining teams were reseeded for a double-elimination tournament that took place from Thursday to Saturday.

Head coach of Sonoma State’s baseball program, John Goelz, has transformed the Seawolves into a perennial powerhouse since he took over in 1986. Goelz is a legendary figure in the world of college baseball. He has established himself as one of the most successful coaches in the region. Goelz ability to develop talent and create a winning culture has made him a sought-after mentor for young athletes. He has  over 1,100 wins, 10 conference championships, 11 NCAA tournament appearances and one California Collegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year award in 2016. Goelz’s Impact on the sport of college baseball is undeniable.

‘We are the champions’; SSU takes home title

History has been made yet again for the Sonoma State Softball program as they have now been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season champions. This has been a historic season for the program, being at the top of their league and pitching the program’s first perfect game, earning a multitude of weekly CCAA player awards from start to finish of the regular season, and now being named the best in their conference. The coaches’ and players’ hard work is finally paying off.

Golf shows out at CCAA Championship

As Spring grows near, the Sonoma State University Men’s Golf team finished fifth in last week’s CCAA Championship (California Collegiate Athletic Association). The Women’s team had a bittersweet finish, ending the championship in a tie with Cal State Los Angeles for fourth place. Unfortunately, that brings the women’s season to a close while the men’s team looks ahead to NCAA West Regionals.

Coach Jennifer Bridges reaches career milestone

Sonoma State Softball’s outstanding season continues as they stack up their accomplishments. They are now ranked eleventh by the NFCA coaches poll, the highest in program history. Alongside this, head coach Jennifer Bridges has reached 500 career wins, over 450 of them being with the SSU Softball team. Lastly, freshman pitcher Charlie Johnson leads the NCAA DII in earned run average at 0.27.

Seawolves shine-in series win

Sonoma State’s Baseball team walked away from their clash with CSU Dominguez Hills on top, winning three out of their four games. Despite the best efforts of the rain to halt the series after the first game on Thursday, the teams were able to battle it out on the Santa Rosa JC’s field on Friday. The Seawolves came away victorious in both games. This was followed the very next day with a doubleheader. The games were split on that occasion. It’s coming at a vital time for the Seawolves as their season has been a mixed bag so far. This series win now brings them to 6-12 in CCAA(California Collegiate Athletic Association) play and 12-14 overall.

Softball continues their grand slam season

The Sonoma State Softball team has been on a tear in the CCAA from players reaching milestones to their recent success in the CCAA Tournament of Champions. Giana Hays, Anna Zoia-Buescher, and Courtney Jack all reached 100 career hits, while Jordyn Martinez and Buescher were named to the 2023 Tucci/NFCA DII Player of the Year watchlist.

Seawolves sweep Lumberjacks

Sonoma State’s Softball team’s fearsome reputation continues to make its rounds through the league. Four games were fought between Cal Poly Humbolt’s Lumberjacks and SSU’s Seawolves. It tested the Seawolves to their very limits until finally, the Lumberjacks started to cave from the Seawolf offense in the series finale as the Seawolves swept.
