Alpha Xi Delta hosts annual Xi Man pageant

Alpha Xi Delta presents Xi Man 2022! This yearly event consists of seven different boys, one from each fraternity on campus and two from sports teams who all compete in a pageant. Basketball and lacrosse volunteered to participate this year for their sports. This event took place on Saturday Oct.15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The show has multiple categories that they compete in, one being a talent portion and then miss congeniality.

Spotlight: Mixed Martial Arts club

With all the craziness that has happened so far this semester in Rohnert Park, from creepy clowns to on campus stabbings, I think it’s safe to say that we could all learn some self-defense techniques in case we find ourselves in a dangerous situation. The Mixed Martial arts club offers just that. With practices every Thursday at 7 p.m. in International hall 104, the MMA club offers a variety of self defense techniques through different forms of martial arts. Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, kickboxing, and Muay Thai are some of the main focuses of this semester.

SSU's Black Student Union talks voting

Sonoma State’s Black Student Union met in The Hub Tuesday, Oct.11 to discuss important topics that black people have endured in the past and how it has changed since then. Students learned more about the era of Jim Crow laws and how it legalized racial segregation. One of the main focus points of the event was discussing how the Jim Crow era sought to prevent Black people from voting. BSU also provides a safe space to discuss other controversial subjects.

BOO! Greek life hosts a Blood Drive

This week, on Oct. 5, our first annual Greek Week Blood Drive was held in the Mt Denali Gym. This event went on all day from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and many students stopped by to donate their blood. Greek Week consists of all Greek Life organizations on campus competing on teams against each other in races such as, a school supply drive, blood drive, can-struction, and field day. In the end, a trophy is awarded to each chapter on the winning team.

Make your 'Health and Wellbeing' a priority

On Wednesday Oct. 5, Student Involvement hosted a health and wellbeing fair in the Seawolf Plaza to give students the tools to keep their bodies and minds in good enough shape to grind out the rest of the fall semester. At the height of the event, the plaza was packed with students. The temperature was perfect and the sun was glistening. Students from all grades showed up to gather these tools and tips from various clubs.

M. Quentin Williams talks police discourse

Sonoma State University hosted a community event where everyone was informed about the different ways to better correspond in a community and build a deeper understanding of one another. Guest speaker M. Quentin Williams addressed the importance of seeing eye to eye and the reconstruction of relationships between communities and law enforcement. Williams is a former FBI agent and currently, head of Dedication To Community (D2C), a nonprofit organization with the goal to educate and empower communities with various workshops residing on critical issues in public safety and law enforcement, as well as diversity, belonging, and equity with the overall goal to develop relationships in communities.

"Can We All Get Along?"

A high school who’s alumni list consists of: Jackie Robinson, a fortune 500 CEO, the lead singer of Van Halen, and many other accomplished individuals across all fields and of all races, should be recognized as one of the very best in the country. Blasphemously, this is not the case, for John Muir High School, in Pasadena, CA. John Muir High and Sonoma State alum, Pablo Miralles, shed light onto why this is, in his documentary “Can We All Get Along? The Segregation of John Muir High School. On Thursday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. in Ives Hall, the School of Arts & Humanities gave students the opportunity to watch the documentary and participate in a Q&A with Miralles. Students were given the unique chance to learn about a problem that needs attention, and talk about it with the very person bringing it to light.

Seawolves SPEAK! This week, students were interviewed by the STAR about budgeting and finances

Life is constantly changing, and because of that students consistently have to make tough decisions regarding finances. Last week the STAR ran an editorial article discussing the difficulties of growing up and budgeting while in college and learning to navigate the real world. Recent economic changes have caused many things that are necessities for students like gas, housing, and food to become much more expensive and hard to get. With this in mind, it was the perfect opportunity for us to chat with some students and get their varying perspectives and experiences managing their lives and finances during this time.

Seawolves participate in grocery BINGO

The fall semester is now in full swing and Sonoma State students are adjusting to adulthood. This involves budgeting finances and making frequent runs to the grocery store. With the rise of inflation, groceries are becoming more expensive than ever before. According to the USDA, in 2022, food prices are predicted to increase anywhere between 8.5% and 9.5%. To help address the financial issue at hand, while also keeping spirits high and promoting an entertaining environment, SSU staff members hosted a Grocery Bingo.
