Staff shortage leads to temporary closures

It’s been over two years since the COVID-19 pandemic first began to change our world, and since that time many facets of our lives have returned to normalcy. That is not the case for the school’s culinary staff, which has faced a slower return back to full-staffing levels. This has led to many popular campus eating spots remaining closed despite a full student-body now back on campus. As a result, lines at the spots that have been open, Sip and Lobos, are typically long for customers and overwhelming for workers.

Seawolves JUMP into service

The Join Us Making Progress (JUMP) community service program of the Associated Students, hosted a food drive at the Redwood Empire Food Bank in Santa Rosa on Saturday, Sept. 10. Nearly fifteen Seawolves were brought to the food bank. They managed to package dozens of meals to support less fortunate families all over Sonoma County. The meals can also make it to various places in Northern California such as Humboldt and Lake County. But, they’re primarily in Sonoma County helping local people in Rohnert Park, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa.

Sonoma State’s WOCC provides safe space for women of color

For almost a decade the Woman of Color Collective (WOCC) has offered a confidential space for Sonoma State’s women of color (WOC). With SSU being a Predominantly White Institution (PWI), the WOCC plays an important role in making sure WOC have a safe space on campus to be both vulnerable and authentic. Each week the collective meets on Wednesday’s at noon to have a discussion co-facilitated by WOC Counseling and Psychological Services staff, as well as staff from the HUB.

Sonoma State University welcomed everyone back to campus with a celebration for new and returning students. Every year, the week before classes begin, SSU’s Student Involvement organizes an event known as BIG NITE where everyone gets together for one last day of fun before academics begin. This event gives new students a feel of college life by introducing them to the campus layout and providing opportunities to meet fellow students.

Seawolf Dayz’ “Express Yo’ Self” highlights campus diversity

One of the best aspects of the Sonoma State Community is its strong push for inclusion and celebrating diversity. This was on full display at Seawolf Dayz’ Wednesday Aug. 24 event: “Express Yo Self! Creating and Connecting in Community”. According to the Seawolf Living website the event was “a creative expression workshop to honor your story and discover ways to support and strengthen your well-being”. It also featured guest speaker, Tina Rogers, a Multicultural Art Educator from here in Rohnert Park, and took place in The HUB Cultural Center on the second floor of the student center.

Stress Free Zone for students during finals week

Sonoma State will be offering a Stress Free Zone on campus for students to unwind after dealing with the overwhelming tasks of moving out and studying for finals. The Stress Free Zone will take place in Weyden + Brewster from May 15-18 where students can relax, play games and make crafts all while enjoying the company of others. All events will take place from 8:30-10 p.m.

Last friday, Associated Student Productions (ASP) hosted a Spring Carnival. The carnival was held on Person Lawn from 5-7:30 p.m. to celebrate the conclusion of the semester. With the weather a bit breezy at 63 degrees, that didn't stop students from showing up for free entertainment as students from all years came out for the free games, music and shirts.

Seawolves travel to Oracle Park

Sonoma State students got the chance to watch the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s go head to head in the annual Battle of the Bay on April 26. The crowd was roaring in anticipation of the game while SSU students made their way to the bleachers to watch the action unfold from leftfield. This event, put on by Student Involvement, had a limited number of tickets for any Seawolves to purchase.

Queer Student Alliance hosts Queer Prom 2022

This past Friday, Sonoma State University’s Queer Student Alliance (QSA) hosted Queer Prom 2022. This was a night designed for fostering community among queer students, complete with food, dancing and wearing their own unique attire. Students and their guests gathered together in the Russian River Valley room from 7-10 p.m. to indulge in a special evening of celebrating themselves and their community, completely free of judgment.
