The tea was spilled with President Mike Lee

Sonoma State interim President Mike Lee sat down on Tuesday, Jan. 31 to spill the tea and answer from students. The students asked questions that ranged from lighthearted and fun to more serious questions that some students wanted answers to. Spill The Tea with President Lee was hosted by Associated Student Productions, ASP. Aside from possible answers to any pressing questions one might have, Seawolves were also encouraged to show up to the event for free bubble tea. The first 100 people to show up were able to get their hands on the treat while waiting for the event to begin. Although there seemed to be plenty to go around at the start of the questions and answer session.

Spotlight: SSU Filipino Martial Arts Club

To some, learning martial arts is nothing but learning how to properly defend yourself in a threatening situation. However many people tend to forget that martial arts are considered an art form, and the meaning behind it is much more skin-deep than just learning how to fight. The SSU FMA Club meets twice every week on Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m., and on Fridays from noon - 1 p.m., both in Niagara Studio on the second floor of the Rec Center.

Sonoma State jammed out with a performance from the band Veretski Pass filling up nearly every seat at the Schroder Hall venue on Oct. 6. The band returned to SSU grounds, as they have been invited multiple times throughout the years to share their musical talents, for yet another performance inviting students and residents of Sonoma County to enjoy. This time, their appearance was a part of the Jewish Music Series held every other Thursday at SSU, where various bands and musical artists perform different types of music inspired by Jewish heritage or influence.

Once a student at Sonoma State University himself, earning a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in marketing, as well as a jazz studies minor in 2011, Andy Shepherd now works as the Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications for the Green Music Center at SSU. Shepherd has had the pleasure of promoting hundreds of shows from “classical icons”, as he described them, such as, Yo- Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman, to artists like Andy Grammer and Fitz and the Tantrums.

Friday afternoons with Seawolves are back in action. This was definitely a more quiet event as Friday’s are not the most common day for students to have class/ be on campus.  Another Seawolf Living event was held in The HUB Cultural Center on Friday Sep. 30 from 2:30pm-3:00pm. This event wasn’t like your average bonding event. Instead, it was very much hands-on which seemed to make for a fun and engaging activity for the participating students. With a step-by-step tutorial on how to crochet, for beginners. They also provided coffee, fruit, and snacks for the participants who joined the event.

Culture and Conchas for Latinx Heritage Month

Another beautiful day on campus brought festivities to celebrate Latinx Heritage month, which runs from Sept. 15. to Oct. 15. Culture and Conchas was put on by Associated Student Productions (ASP) on Sept. 22 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and offered students a chance to watch a performance by Ballet Folklorico Sarita, a Mexican dance group from Windsor. Along with the performance, ASP also gave out conchas, which are a Mexican sweet bread. The name “concha” means “shell” in Spanish, which is how they got their name, because of the shell-like pattern of streusel baked onto the top of the bread roll.

Friday Night Live: Ice Cream Social

A group of sociable seawolves got together and created lifelong memories at the “Friday Night Live” event hosted by Student Involvement on Sept. 23. The event took place on campus at Weyden & Brewsters located in the Student Center. An array of board games were scattered across the tables including Jenga, Yahtzee, Catch Phrase, and Connect 4. More than a dozen students participated in the activities and indulged in Cold Stone Ice Cream-courtesy of the event planners.

Seawolf clubs compete to 'Chalk the Plaza'

Associated Student Productions hosted “Chalk the Plaza” on Sept. 12 at the Seawolf Plaza, offering SSU clubs the chance to win a donation of two hundred dollars for the best drawing. A dozen clubs competed for the prize; fraternities, sororities, the Anime Club, and many more showed up to participate. Teams were given 2 hours to complete their drawings and after they were done, the judges walked around and voted for the winner. In the end, the Filipino American Association of Sonoma State University won the competition. All the clubs put a lot of time and effort into their drawings, but according to the judges, it was FAASSU that was best.

Hillary Homzie: Professor by day, author by night

Sonoma State professor Hilary Homize is releasing her 17th children's book, “If You Were a Princess: True Stories of Brave Leaders from Around the World” featuring the stories of almost 40 princesses. A nonfiction, informational, and very diverse book that turns around the concept of what a princess is or what she represents, the princesses in this book are coders, Olympic athletes, MD/PhDs, inventors, professors and astronomers.
