SSU hosts inaugural Native Fest through the HUB

On April 22, the HUB Cultural Center put on Native Fest, a celebration of Native

American and Indigenous culture. This event welcomed around 13 different Native

organizations to SSU to discuss their programs and what they do for the community.

There was also live music from Sonoma State’s own Paul Steward, who has been a Native

American Studies professor at SSU since 2016.

The Friday Night Live events hosted by Student Involvement, or SI, at Weyden and Brewster’s have become a staple for many students who are looking to have a good time on campus during the weekend. This most recent Friday, W&B hosted a Bingo night with the opportunity for students to win up to 12 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. Each winner went home with a box of assorted Girl Scout cookies, purchased by SI before the most recent cookie season ended.

Last week, the Vagina Monologues were put on in a pre-recorded format for students and faculty to enjoy. After being on hiatus for two years, the women of the Monologues were very excited to have a performance to show the Sonoma State community. The Vagina Monologues started out as small interviews about the vagina facilitated by student director V Ornelas. Eventually, the interviews grew from short-form questioning to longer discussions that became The Vagina Monologues.

Students get creative at SSU’s latest Getaway Trip

On March 31, a group of 11 students got together and traveled by van to downtown Sebastopol in Sonoma County for an unforgettable pottery painting experience at the CreateIt! studio. The small art studio can house about 30 people simultaneously, and hosts pottery making classes, pottery painting sessions, painting classes, and other activities for people of all ages. This Getaway Trip was hosted by Student Involvement.

The HUB highlights new perspectives on the untold story of the Compton Cafeteria Riot

In honor of Trans Week of Visibility the HUB Cultural Center screened the documentary “Screaming Queens”. This film discussed the very first transgender riot that took place in a part of San Francisco known as the Tenderloin in 1966. Many are unaware that the Compton Cafeteria riot took place three years prior to the widely known Stonewall riots. The HUB showed this film to educate students on this lesser known event, as it is integral to understanding the ongoing battle against trans discrimination.

Spreading Awareness through Comedy with Sasheer Zamata

On March 16, Sonoma State welcomed famous comedian Sasheer Zamata to campus. This event was put on by ASP, Associated Student Production, and was located on the third floor of the student center in Ballroom D. In honor of Women's History Month, Zamata’s set focused on feminism and female experiences in society.

Zamata is well known for writing and starring in shows like “Home Economics”, “Woke,” and “Saturday Night Live.”

The Faculty Jazz Composers, comprised of six jazz professors, performed along with a few other music professors at Schroeder Hall on March 17 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for numerous students, faculty, and community members. It was an overall quiet night for Sonoma State University students; many had gone home or were packing to leave the next day for Spring Break, but Schroeder Hall lit up the night with the Faculty Jazz Composers concert.

Associated Student Productions (ASP) featured its first in-person Disney Drawing Night on March 10 from 7–8 p.m. at Ballroom D., offering students of all skill levels the opportunity to learn how to draw Disney characters instructed by a former Disney artist while enjoying snacks and winning prizes. “These events offer a space for students to practice their creativity, try something new that is beginner-friendly, and de-stress…” wrote Amanda Fitz, ASP Event Director, in an email.

Students took the floor to showcase their talents at ASP's (Associated Students Productions) first open mic night of the semester on Wed. March 9 from 7:00 p.m - 8:00 p.m. The event took place on campus at Weyden + Brewster and featured a variety of talents, including musicians, comedians, scriptwriters, and poets. Altogether, 5 students performed and approximately 15 audience members attended the event.

Music Department students perform the Rock  Collegium at the Green Music Center

SSU's Concert Jazz and Latin Jazz Ensembles took the stage of Schroeder Recital Hall on March 3 from 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The Concert Jazz Ensemble kicked off the show with a five-piece set which consisted of songs by famous musicians such as Duke Ellington and Hank Mobley. After a brief intermission, the Latin Jazz group performed six pieces starting with a song called Amazonia by Ana Caram.
