Cold winds and rain storms mark the end of fire season

Recent weather events have marked the end of the wildfire season, bringing with it freezing temperatures and what some have called the strongest storm of the season.

Between Monday and Tuesday of last week, gusts of wind ranging from about 35 mph to 45 mph and heavy rain swept through the North Bay. The storm also brought with it a single lightning strike. The storm grew more powerful as it progressed through California.

Housing facility for homeless opens in Rohnert Park

In an effort to curb the rising number of individuals experiencing homelessness in Rohnert Park, the city opened the doors to a new 60-unit supportive housing facility last Monday on Labath Avenue. The site, called, “Labath Landing,” will act as an interim housing program to address the city’s estimated 250 homeless individuals, and per their website, will provide mental health counseling and job training to help residents become stable enough to eventually move out into permanent housing.

SSU permanently closes on-campus COVID testing site

Sonoma State University is discontinuing operations of the COVID-19 on campus testing and screening center in the recreation center beginning Nov. 1.

The recreation testing center has been open since February 2021 and has helped nearly 3,000 individuals with a total of 15,000 individual tests. Over the fall semester, in the last ten weeks, there have been less than 100 COVID tests administered.

The Sonoma State University food venue that has been closed so long some students don’t know what it is, Toast, will reopen on Oct. 31. Culinary services are hopeful that the reopening of toast will combat the lengthy lines at Sip.

Located in between Darwin and Stevenson hall near the Bacon and Eggs sculpture, the kiosk will be open Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Toast will serve everything from coffee, to pastries, bagels, grab n go sandwiches, salads, sushi, bottled beverages, and more.

SSU nursing ranks No. 7 after threat of budget cuts, discontinuance

In a congratulatory message sent out to students on Oct. 11, Sonoma State University praised its Department of Nursing for ranking No.7 out of No.131 nursing programs in California. SSU’s nursing program was rated the second highest amongst all CSUs. SSU’s score of 98.50 bested those of all CSUs, except for CSU Long Beach, which secured a No.4 spot with a score of 99.19.
